Sidney waited for the groundsman to put him down and stared at the figure ahead of him. ‘Glud…’ he croaked, confused and a little scared. ‘Where are we? ’
Glud turned and Sidney hooted. ‘Oh boy, you should see the size of your eyes! They never looked like that before they painted you.’
The green man bristled. ‘Well you should see the size of your teeth! And weren’t you listening to those blokes who painted us? They were making us look interesting so someone would buy us for their garden.’
‘Why would they do that?’
‘We’re garden ornaments, Sidney. Don’t you Earthlings know anything? I’m green with big eyes ’cos I’m an alien, and they’re always popular. I think you’re a squirrel.’
‘Oh no! That means I’ll have to eat nuts. Yuk!’
‘We’ll soon find out. Smile nicely and these folks approaching might buy us.’
‘Don’t leave me!’ Sidney squeaked as Glud was carried away by a nice-looking family. ‘Paint me green and I’d look like an alien, too. Aliens can have big teeth…’

A www, poor Sydney! His friend was purchased by a family and he wasn’t! Cute story Mille!!
Thank you, PJ. It was a fun prompt this week.
It was a fun prompt this week! Next week will be just the opposite! ***YIKES!!***
Ooh, that sounds a bit ominous… 🙂 This weeks just cried out for a funny story.
Yes, I agree with you. There were a lot of cute stories from this week’s prompt. I’m also looking forward to the stories from the prompt for next week.
I would have gone for the squirrel 🙂
So would I. Aliens of any colour aren’t my thing. Thanks, Draliman. 🙂
sweet!!! 😀
Thank you, Cybele. I like to write a silly story now and then. 😀
me too sometimes! 😀
Aww such a fun story! I hope the family doubles back and buys Sidney too!
Yes, I hope Sidney doesn’t get left behind. He obviously doesn’t want to be lonely. 🙂
That was fun! Great take on this photo prompt!

Thanks Annie. I’m glad you liked it. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this. Enjoy the day! Appreciate the Kind Support 💗
Thanks for reading, MG, and thank you for your support of my books. ❤
I hope poor Sydney gets to go home with a nice family too. Although I don’t understand why everyone keeps calling him a squirrel. He’s so obviously a devil or imp to me. Is it the teeth?
Yore right. I think he is a devil – he has a pitchfork, after all. I decided he was a squirrel because of his teeth and was just dressed up as a a devil (which I chose to ignore).
You’re not the only one who made the squirrel connection, though. It makes me think that I am somehow squirrel deprived in my everyday life, ha ha!
Well, Joy, we have red squirrels here, so I’m making that my excuse for writing about a squirrel! I confess I overlooked the fork/ trident. 😀
Sounds like a reasonable excuse to me. 🙂
A very cute story. It makes you have compassion for the one left behind, but he may end up with a family that has a lot of characters just like him and will be happy once again. Hopefully, his friend will like his new home and be treated well.
Thanks, Jessie. I’m sure Sidney will end up in a happy home. I agree, being the one left behind and feeling unwanted is not something anyone wants.
Awww, such a cute story 😀
I am sure he will end up with a great family ❤
Well, if I were to write Episode 2, I’d make sure Sidney found a happy home. He looks a cute little fella – even if he is a little red devil. Thanks. Galit. 😀
Yeah happy ending sounds perfect 😀 ❤
Oh this is fun! I never know what I’ll find over here, Millie – and I mean that as a compliment 🙂 ❤
Love it. Sidney becomes increasingly insecure as a consequence of constant rejection and turns to distilled nut-juice for consolation. His work at the garden centre suffers and he is sacked (or, possibly, axed). Depressed and alone, he wanders the streets until he meets a dejected feral pigeon. Instantly, Sidney realises there is a creature that society dislikes more than himself. He is just coming to terms with his new-found confidence when he meets a wooden gnome-ess; they fall in love and live happily ever after.
Ha ha! Now, Mike… you’ve just convinced me you could be an excellent writer of flash fiction. I really like your continuation and how you describe Sidney’s rocky road to eventual happiness. I’ve never tried distilled nut juice, but it sounds nice. 😀
I’m sure someone, somewhere, has tried to make distilled nut juice… 🙂
Poor Devil. Left behind. But, I have serious questions about the family’s tastes in buying a icky green alien. Good, fun take on the prompt. Cheers, Varad.

Ha ha. An icky green alien isn’t my idea of a garden ornament, either, but here’s no accounting for taste… (Why do I think that somebody already said that one? 😀 ) Thanks for reading and liking my silly little story, Varad.
It’s terrible to say, but I’m sure someone would buy that alien and put in their yard just to upset the neighbors! The squirrel is definitely a better buy 😛 Silly and wonderfully written story, Millie.
Ellespeth
Thanks, Ellespeth. I can think of several people who’d probably put something ridiculous in their garden to annoy their neighbours. That’s people for you. 🙂 I rather liked Sidney (although I overlooked the fact that he’s a red devil and not a squirrel at all).
Poor Sydney, left all alone. I guess aliens are more catchy these days. Nice story!
Poor Sidney’s plight brought a tear to my eye, too. Perhaps the family just liked the colour green? 😀 Thank you, fictionspawn.
Well done. An alien with big teeth would be interesting.
I liked this playful post story! I like yard art and watched “Gnomeo and Juliet” animated children’s film just in the beginning of July. Yard gnomes and fairies are fun subjects! Aliens and squirrels are also fun!
